Guare reads play July 17

Midsummer at New Era

Jul 10, 2011
"Lilacs" is among the recent watercolors going on view at Vinalhaven's New Era Gallery.

Vinalhaven — In its "Midsummer 2011" show, New Era Gallery on Main Street will feature prints and sculpture by Alison Hildreth, drawings by Marguerite White and watercolors by John Wulp. The show will open with an artists reception Saturday, July 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. and will run through Aug. 3.

Hildreth’s etchings, drawings and three-dimensional work explore themes and literary references she has developed throughout her career. White’s masterful charcoal drawings of birds on vellum are reminiscent of da Vinci’s in both their subtlety and their intense focus on subject matter. Wulp’s most recent watercolors are brilliant examples of his super-realist style brought to bear on the foliage and blooms of his own island home. In addition, several of Wulp’s large-scale portraits will be on loan from July 16 through 28 to be exhibited in the adjacent Windy Way Barn.

As part of its ongoing 10th year celebration, New Era Gallery will host a reading by John Guare ("House of Blue Leaves," "Six Degrees of Separation") of his new play "Erased" in the Windy Way Barn Sunday evening, July 17. The subject of the play is Elzbieta Chezevska, who also is the subject of John Wulp’s portrait "The Red Dress." Chezevska was one of the most celebrated actresses of her generation in Poland.

Guare will be joined by actor Omar Sangare, who performed with Chezevska in "Six Degrees of Separation" in Warsaw and who also acted in the recent New York production of "Erased."  Seating for the performance is limited to 50 people; reservations may be made by calling the gallery at 863-9351.

Summer gallery hours are Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Work by gallery artists also may be seen online at neweragallery.com.
