Midcoast wrestlers experience success at Empire NationalsMcGonagle, Bowen win respective weight classes
Brockport, N.Y. — A handful of young Midcoast mat athletes competed in — and excelled at — the 2014 Empire Nationals Wrestling Festival on Friday and Saturday, April 12-13. In fact, two area youths nabbed first-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
Connor McGonagle, who represented Smitty's Barn of New Hampshire but is an Owls Head resident and wrestled for the Oceanside West Middle School team during the winter, finished first in the 115.4 weight class, going 3-0 to win his bracket.
Elvis Bowen, who wrestled for Camden Hills Regional High School during the winter but represented a group of Oceanside wrestlers in this meet, also went 2-0 and finished first in the 160.5 weight class.
Michael Yates and Ben Ripley also represented Oceanside, while Jacob Racioppi and Jacob Waterman represented neighboring Belfast. Yates wrestled for Camden-Rockport Middle School in the winter, Ripley for Oceanside West Middle School and Racioppi and Waterman both Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast.
The event was held at the Special Events Recreation Center in Brockport, N.Y.
The individual results for competing Midcoast grapplers included:
100.4 pounds — Ripley lost to Nicolas Albornoz, Underground, 8-0; and lost to Matt Chimento, Apex, 8-6.
115.4 pounds — McGonagle beat Hunter Shaut, CVA, 6-1; beat Adam Scott, Team Impact, 10-2; beat Devin Rivet, Superior Academy, 1-0; beat Cooper Fleming, Fisheye, 10-0; and beat Garrett Kopp, Ragin Raisins, 3-0, to finish first.
125.3 pounds — Yates beat Christopher Alberti, The Square Academy, 4-1; pinned Trent Mastrogiovanni, Buxton School; and then lost to Ethan Cooper, Dawgs, 7-0, to finish second.
130.5 pounds — Racioppi lost to Zack Brown, Penfield, 13-11; and lost to Jesse Jones, Superior, 10-5.
152.5 pounds — Waterman beat Austin Eastman, Ragin Raisins, 1-0; pinned Joseph Giorlando, Long Beach Gladiators, at 4:00; and was pinned by Trent Goodman, Wrestlers, at 2:36, to finish second.
160.5 pounds — Bowen beat Zach Breeden, Power Cats, 2-1; and beat Matt Cicco, NWAA, 5-1, to finish first.
