Midcoast teams make pitch at Mariner Kick Off Tourney
Thomaston — The Oceanside Mariners Kick Off Tourney showcased a great deal of talent among all participating squads, meaning it could be a long season — in terms of teams qualifying for the postseason and perhaps making deep runs — for several schools.
Teams from Camden Hills, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, Belfast, Medomak Valley, Winslow, Erskine Academy of South China, Messalonskee of Oakland, Searsport, Winslow, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield and host Oceanside competed in the preseason tournament, which saw a full slate of games played on three fields.
Games were played on Sam Pendleton Field (home field of the Mariners) at Oceanside West, a nearby auxiliary field and the field at neighboring Thomaston Grammar School.
Camden Hills' Claire Pierce won the juggling competition, while teammate Rachel Pease also won the goalie shootout and Erskine Academy's Avery Bond and Marissa Chamberlain won the pairs heading competition.
The 2014 all-tourney team, comprised of two players from each participating team, included: Ashley Mason and Brie Wajer, Lincoln Academy; Lilah Chaar and Anna Bucklin, Searsport; Avery Bond and Taylor Boucher, Erskine Academy I; Jenna Willy and Jordan Jowett, Erskine II; Emma Gutheinz and Hannah Wincklhofer, Camden Hills; Sarah Clough and Katherine Sanborn, Maranacook; Jordan Moore and Sophie Cohen, Medomak Valley; Fern Calkins and Jessica Charrier, Messalonskee; Makenna Brooks and Caitlin Raye, Oceanside; Alexis Racioppi and Ashley Flanders, Belfast; Kristi Moody and Jenna Petrovich, Winslow; and Ashley Alton and Sydney Morton, Maine Central Institute.
All-tourney team members received a t-shirt, while competition winners received soccer balls.
