Midcoast girls soccer squads thrive in annual Mariner tourneyAll-tourney teams named as squads prepare for regular season
Thomaston — If the quality of play at the annual Oceanside Mariners Kick Off Tourney Saturday, Aug. 31 was any indication, it will be a strong season for high school girls soccer in the Midcoast and beyond this fall.
Teams from Camden Hills, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, Belfast, Mount View of Thorndike, Medomak Valley, Winslow, Erskine Academy of South China, Messalonskee of Oakland and Oceanside competed in Saturday's preseason tournament, with both Camden Hills and Erskine Academy fielding two squads.
Searsport was scheduled to participate, but dropped out Aug. 28.
Other teams sometimes filled in to face the scheduled Searsport opponents when not scheduled to play another game, while other instances saw the scheduled opponents of the Vikings simply hold impromptu practices or watch other games on the other two fields.
The all-tourney team, which was comprised of two girls from each squad being recognized by their respective coaches for their play on the pitch Saturday were: Morgan Achorn and Alyx York of Lincoln Academy, Kasey McLeod and Breann Cummings of Belfast, Lariah Langis and Emma Wilkinson of Erskine I, Hillary Libby and Calli Lavamway of Winslow, Alexis Strain and Jenni Nadeau of Mount View, Emma Gutheinz and Katlyn York of Camden Hills I, Elizabeth Cummons and Brynn Wrona of Camden Hills II, Ashley Gardner and Kelsey Brooks of Oceanside, Megan Dunn and Mallory Chamberlain of Erskine II, Sophie Cohen and Sami Griffin of Medomak Valley and Amanda Knight and Cassidy Cherette of Messalonskee
Libby of Winslow won the shootout competition, while Charlotte Messer of Camden Hills won the juggling competition. Messer and Gutheinz of Camden Hills also won the pairs heading competition.
Games were played on Sam Pendleton Field (the Oceanside varsity soccer field), the Oceanside practice field and the Thomaston Grammar School field.
