Midcoast Lens: Ice lanterns
A Rockport couple who wish to remain anonymous have been placing "ice lanterns" around Camden and Rockport in recent weeks. Dubbed by friends as "The Ice Lantern Fairy," the woman has been making the lanterns on her own time, said helper Amy Root.
Root said the couple began placing ice lanterns in Rockport and Camden and asked Root to assist in spreading the lights farther beyond the borders of the two towns.
"She's making it her part-time job," Root said.
Currently, there are more than a dozen ice lanterns located in the three towns, including the median in Rockport village by the opera house, Hope General Store and elementary school, French and Brawn in Camden and several private residences, Root said.

Take a drywall bucket or the like, and fill with water, set out side to freeze. Monitor the freezing progress til you have 2 - 3 inches of ice on all sides. Turn upside down, pour warm water over upside down bucket just enough to release ice, chip top section of ice out very carefully, empty out remaining water and presto you have an ice glass. Place candle inside and you are done....

I saw these the other night and they are beautiful. What a nice gesture of someone to take their time to make something so beautiful.
no their still in the woods
Beautiful!
Is the candle lit and if so isn't that in violation of the "open fire" ordinance in most towns, not to mention the hazard to passing rabbits !
How does one make ice laterns?
Can someone tell us how to make ice candles?
