Midcoast Ice Cats look for return to winning formula

Rockport — The Midcoast Ice Cats again are on the prowl, but have yet to taste their first victory of the new calendar year.

The Ice Cats, a cooperative high school club team that plays against junior varsity and varsity opponents, sport a 2-4-1 record on the heels of back-to-back defeats to Lewiston and Winslow Jan. 7 and Jan. 8, respectively, at the Midcoast Recreation Center.

The following is a recap of both recent contests:

Lewiston 7, Midcoast Ice Cats 1

At the Midcoast Recreation Center Jan. 8, the Ice Cats surrendered six unanswered goals in the final two periods as the Blue Devils surged to the victory.

Noah Klewin notched the lone goal for the Ice Cats, on an assist from Preston Spear, in the first period.

For Lewiston, Joey Frechette tallied four goals, while Brady Cusson added two and Andrew Loisel one. Assists came from Kevin Banister (2), Devin Harrison and Reid Pomerleau.

Henry Laurita minded the net for the Ice Cats, making 28 saves, while Nick Hawk played in goal for the Blue Devils, making eight saves.

The two teams were knotted after the first period before Lewiston poured it on in the second, lighting the lamp four times to take a 5-1 lead. The Blue Devils added two more goals in the third period to close out the win.

Lewiston outshot the Ice Cats 35-9.

Winslow 2, Midcoast Ice Cats 1

At the Midcoast Recreation Center Jan. 7, the Black Raiders were outshot by the hosts, but still managed to escape with a one-goal victory.

Klewin tallied the lone goal for the hosts, on an assist from Sam Kulikowski.

D. Roderick scored both goals for Winslow, on a pair of assists from J. Houghton.

Laurita played in net for the Ice Cats, while A. Beals toiled between the pipes for Winslow. Laurita made 20 saves and Beals 33.

The Ice Cats outshot Winslow 34-22.
