Four delegates from the Seacoast Education Association (SEA), representing employees in RSU 13, attended the 86th annual Maine Education Association Representative Assembly in South Portland.

The weekend conference May 17 and 18 was an opportunity for members from education associations across the state to gather and adopt resolutions that will direct the MEA’s work for the coming year. Furthermore, the body of around 150 delegates discussed and voted on items such as the amendments to the governing bylaws, standing orders, and the 2014 – 2015 MEA budget.

Charles Gallagher, Doug Crossley, Kevin Martin, and Lynn Snow represented the SEA. Several speakers attended the annual assembly including the Vice-President of the National Education Association Lily Eskelsen-Garcia. Congressman and candidate for Maine governor Mike Michaud addressed the delegates at the evening awards banquet.

The local Seacoast Education Association has 240 active professional and ESP (Educational Support Personnel) members in one united group.

The Maine Education Association is the largest labor union in the state of Maine with nearly 24,000 individuals making up its membership. They are an affiliate of the National Education Association, the largest labor union the country, about 2.7 million strong.

The SEA professionals work cooperatively to educate all RSU #13 students. They are the teachers, nurses, guidance counselors, administrative assistants, paraprofessionals, custodians, food service employees, bus drivers, and others on the “frontline.”  Throughout this challenging year in the district, these folks have persevered.  RSU #13 schools have continued to thrive because of their diligence and the committed students that show up each day ready to learn.
