Warren — Midcoast Community Band will perform a free Music in the Park concert Sunday, Aug. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Woolen Mill Park, Main Street in the village. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. Bill and Sue Moody’s ice cream wagon will be on site.

The Midcoast Community Band, based in Thomaston, has been making music since 1986. Formed by Mary Davis in April of that year, the original band was about 13 players, growing to 20 or so by the fall. Current director Jo Anne Parker of St. George took over in 1987, and has seen band members come and go, but there has always been a core of musicians able to perform concerts and parades. Just recently, Parker has welcomed three new members and is excited at the prospect of continuing growth within the band. Membership stays right around 25 or 30 players.

Midcoast Community Band is selling, as a fundraiser for parade trailer upkeep and other band expenses, copies of “And the Band Plays On — 25 Years with the Midcoast Community Band.” The book was compiled by band member Betty Bilodeau and edited by band member Juni Shepardson, with help on content from Parker. It includes anecdotes from band members, past and present, and more than 120 pictures through the years.

The band plays a wide variety of music including marches, Broadway show tunes, pop classics and classical music — something to suit everyone’s taste. Anyone interested in joining the band should call Parker at 372-6737 or come to a rehearsal at the American Legion building in Thomaston Wednesday evenings.
