Midcoast Community Band concert
Warren — The Midcoast Community Band, formed in 1986 and directed for the last 25 years by Jo Anne Parker of St. George, will play an open-air concert Sunday, Aug. 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Woolen Mill Park, in the village on the riverfront.
The band’s repertoire includes classical music, Broadway show tunes, marches, pop tunes and concert overtures. Parker likes to include a variety of music in each of the band’s performances, sometimes dedicating a whole concert to a certain theme. Members of the band come from all walks of life; are all ages, from school students to retired folks; and hail from all the communities in the Midcoast area.
The history of the band, which has been part of many a local parade and celebration over the years, has just been compiled by Betty Bilodeau, bells player for nine years (with help from Parker and fellow band members Juni Shepardson and Joe Anderson), in a book titled "… And the Band Plays On, 25 Years of History about the Midcoast Community Band."
The book will be available at the free concert, with all sales proceeds going towards new music and equipment for the band and to help keep its royal blue flatbed with striped canopy top on the road for years to come.
New members are always welcome; call Parker at 372-6737. Rehearsals are held Wednesdays from 7:15 to 9 p.m. at the Thomaston American Legion, behind the business block.
