Midcoast Babe Ruth League swings in with opening weekend games

The Midcoast Babe Ruth League — a spring/summer baseball league for 13-to-15-year-old players in Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties — swung in Sunday, May 18, with six of the nine teams in action.

Regular-season games will be played on Sundays until mid-June, then the schedule will open up after area schools are closed for the summer.

Teams in the league, including the high schools from which players are pooled from, are: Rockland Café (Oceanside High School), Waldo County (Mount View High School and Searsport District High School), Camden (Camden Hills Regional High School), Damariscotta Lions (Lincoln Academy of Newcastle), Waldoboro (Medomak Valley High School), Swan Lake Grocery (Belfast Area High School), Wiscasset Merchants (Wiscasset High School), Rockport (Camden Hills Regional High School) and Union Farm Equipment (Medomak Valley High School).

Union Farm Equipment plays its home games at Medomak Valley High School and Waldoboro at the Waldoboro Recreation Field, while Rockport and Camden play home games at the Marge Jones Recreational Facility in Rockport.

Rockland Café plays its home games at the Oceanside High School baseball field in Thomaston, Waldo County at Searsport District High School, Swan Lake Grocery at Belfast Area High School, Wiscasset Merchants at Wiscasset High School and Damariscotta Lions at Great Salt Bay School in Damariscotta.

Each team will play 11 regular-season games and each team qualifies for postseason play.

The regular season concludes on Wednesday, July 2, with the postseason beginning Monday, July 7. The championship game will be at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16 at Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro.

Babe Ruth baseball is for players ages 13-15, born on or after May 1, 1998 and prior to May 1, 2001.

Following the championship game, all-star teams will be chosen among the eight participating squads: A 13-year-old team, a 14-year-old team and a 13-15-year-old team. Those squads will then move on to play in their respective state tournaments.

Action from the opening weekend of regular-season play May 18 saw Rockland Café beat Waldo County 7-5, Swan Lake Grocery beat Waldoboro 10-0 and Damariscotta Lions beat Camden 19-3.

Wiscasset Merchants and Union Farm Equipment were slated to play, but the game was postponed due to wet field conditions.

The following is a recap of reported results:

Rockland Café 7, Waldo County 5

At Thomaston May 18, the hosts got out to an early lead and prevailed by two runs over the visitors. Rockland Café scored four runs in the first inning, two in the third and one in the fifth. Waldo County scored five runs in the sixth inning.

Coby Dorr, Matt Waldron and Logan Sheridan pitched for Rockland Café, allowing nine hits and two walks, with 10 strikeouts.

Mitchell Philbrook and Liam Cail pitched for Waldo County, allowing six hits and six walks, with three strikeouts.

Leading Rockland Café at the plate were Titus Kaewthong (single), Dorr (triple), Kirt Ilvonen (single), Sheridan (single) and Josh Peaco (single).

For Waldo County, Barrett Grant (single), Kyle Moore (single), Evan Thomas (single), Cail (single) and Cole Frey (single) paced the offense.
