BOOK LAUNCH AND SIGNING - JULY 25TH - MAINE LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM - "LIGHT ON JIB ISLAND" BY JAN GILLEY - 12:00 NOON

Join us on Friday, July 25th from 12 noon to 3 pm for a book launch and signing with Author Jan Gilley for her book "Light on Jib Island",

Winner in the Pre-teen Fiction category in the 2014 National Indie Excellence Award. As a former islander whose roots are in the Maine coast, I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in Light on Jib Island. This book focuses on a Maine lighthouse keeper’s family, especially on a young teenage daughter’s experience, during the 1920’s, before people even thought of automated lighthouses. We read, and vicariously experience life on an isolated island. Twelve-year-old Elizabeth carries out responsibilities that few of us expect of today’s young teenagers. Here, we weather storms, a wreck, illness, family joys and trials, a beloved grandmother’s death, all without most of the conveniences we now take for granted (although there is a telephone - for emergencies only). We learn specifically of the workings of a lighthouse and of the enormous commitment of lighthouse keepers to the safety of men and women at sea.

While this book was written with young teens in mind, anyone who loves the rugged Maine coast would enjoy this historical novel. Author Jan Gilley bases this book on her own family lore and imagines herself as a girl on the cusp of adulthood in a very challenging situation. I am sure that were I reading this as a twelve-year-old today, this would become a treasured part of my library, to be read over and over again.
