Medomak Valley's goal clear — to make it to Bangor
Waldoboro — The following is a synopsis of the 2013-14 Medomak Valley High School girls basketball team:
Coach/years coached current team: Randy Hooper, ninth year.
Last year's record/playoff information: 5-13, 15th in Eastern Class B. The Panthers did not qualify for the playoffs.
Roster: Seniors Brooke Benedict (5-foot 3-inch guard) and Sammie Griffin (5-3 guard); juniors Hannah Marks (5-10 guard) and Hannah Heald (6-foot forward); and sophomores Sophie Cohen (5-8 forward), Krista Hooper (5-9 forward), Jill van der Schaaf (5-6 guard), Maggie Cox (5-6 guard), Justice Barrows (6-1 center), Brooke Creamer (5-4 guard) and Ariel Haskins (5-10 forward).
Known graduation losses: Amanda Hendrickson-Belloguet, Elise Wallace, Desiree Benner and Missy Philbrook.
Significant impact players: Marks, Heald, Griffin, Barrows, Benedict, Cox and Cohen.
Team strength: Chemistry.
Team goals: To make it to the Eastern Class B playoffs — and the new Cross Insurance Center.
Top league opponents: Nokomis of Newport, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, Maranacook of Readfield, Camden Hills and Gardiner.
Outlook: The Panthers lost a few key cogs to last year's team, but return several impact players, including Griffin, a 3-point threat, and Marks, arguably the team's most complete player.
If all goes well, Medomak Valley could be in the mix for a regional playoff spot by season's end.
“We were close in some losses last year that if we had won we would have had enough Heal Points to get into a prelim game,” said coach Hooper. “We are hoping to turn those close losses last year into wins this year, get better each and every day, and get to the CIC (Cross Insurance Center) this year.”
