Medomak Valley young, growing, focused on individual achievements
Waldoboro — The following is a synopsis of the 2012-13 Medomak Valley High School wrestling team:
Coach/years coached current team: Billy Bramhall, third year.
Last year's record/playoff information: The Panthers finished 12th (47 points) at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championships, seventh (46) at the Eastern Class B championships and 11th (35) at the state Class B championships.
Roster: Seniors Joe King (285 pounds), Dylan Look (220) and Nick Anderson (160); juniors Cyril Miller (182) and Stephen Carleton (195); and freshmen Rayanne Leach (106), Jared Overlock (113), Deagan Poland (120), Riley McCollett (132), Andrew Cronk (138), Tim Jerome (138), Morgan Black (145), Cortland Fischer (152), Samantha Fowles (170), Owen Gilbert (195) and Travis Reed (220).
Outlook: The Panthers have an admittedly young, albeit talented, roster this season, sporting 11 freshmen, two of whom won Pine Tree Wrestling League championships last year in Reed and Gilbert.
McCollett also has "looked really good early in the season," accentuating the Panther youth movement, said the coach.
"When these freshmen get up to their junior and senior years, we're going to be looking like serious contenders," said Bramhall.
While the future is bright for this year's crop of ninth-graders, the time may be now for a few upperclassmen, namely Miller and Look, the team's co-captains.
Bramhall said he expects a lot of out Look and Miller, as the two could have a chance at bringing home hardware from the conference, regional and perhaps state levels this winter.
The third-year coach said his trio of talented freshmen, McCollett, Gilbert and Reed, also could contend.
