Waldoboro — The annual Medomak Valley Holiday Classic, an exhibition high school basketball tournament, was scheduled to tip off on Monday, Dec. 23, with four Midcoast squads and 12 different squads set to take the court during the day-long event.

However, according to Jim Leonard, athletic director for Oceanside High School, one of the participating schools, that event has been canceled.

The tourney is sponsored by — and an important fundraiser for — the Medomak Valley High School All-Sports Boosters.

The host Medomak Valley teams were to be in action, as were the neighboring Oceanside squads. Also in action were the Mount Desert Island, Nokomis of Newport, Skowhegan and Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft girls, as well as the Penquis of Milo, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, Nokomis and Foxcroft Academy boys.

The schedule of games was to include: Oceanside girls versus Mount Desert Island, 11 a.m.; Oceanside boys versus Penquis, 12:30 p.m.; Lincoln Academy boys versus Nokomis, 2 p.m.; Skowhegan girls versus Foxcroft Academy, 3:30 p.m.; Medomak Valley girls versus Nokomis, 5 p.m.; and Medomak Valley boys versus Foxcroft Academy, 6:30 p.m.

The event also was to have an All-Classic team for boys and girls, along with players-of-the-game awards for all six contests.
