Rockland — The Jonathan Frost Gallery, 21 Winter St., presents an exhibit of recent work by noted printmaker Holly Meade. The show, titled “Life, Inside and Out,” runs through Oct. 3. A gala artist’s First Friday reception will be held Sept. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m., featuring live music by Steve Lindsay and Friends.

Meade lives and works in Sedgwick, where she operates her own home gallery, the Reach Road Gallery. She has concentrated on woodblock and linoleum block printing since taking a seminal 2002 workshop with printmaker Hester Stinnet at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art.

“The way the personality of the wood participates in the image, the surface tension and inclination toward pattern it encourages are aspects of this medium I find particularly engaging. There is a sort of elegant, raw honesty that comes through in woodblock prints,” the artist said.

Meade’s prints have been exhibited throughout New England and several are in the collection of the Portland Maine Museum of Art. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Meade also illustrates, and occasionally writes, children’s’ books. One of these, “HUSH, A Thai Lullaby,” written by Minfong Ho, received the Caldecott Honor award; and another, “John Willy and Freddy McGee,” written and illustrated by Meade, received the Charlotte Zolotow Award for Creative Writing.

The exhibit at the Jonathan Frost Gallery includes about two dozen prints of a variety of subjects, ranging from a porcupine to the Holy Trinity. Many of Meade’s celebrated “critters” make an appearance, as well as her Maine-specific workers and more recent images of a spiritual nature. The show also can be seen online at jonathanfrostgallery.com.

Nan Mulford is Gallery Director. Throughout the season, the gallery presents work by two dozen artists in all media including Siri Beckman, Barbara Beebe, Susan Beebe, Phoebe Bly, Rachel Burgess, Carolyn Caldwell, Jonathan Frost, Kathryn Frund, Liz Gribin, Gints Grinbergs, Hugh Gumpel, Peter DeCamp Haines, Alison Hildreth, Constance Kiermaier, Richie Lasansky, Mary Lennox, Steve Lindsay, Ann Makuck, Jessie Pollock, Mimo Gordon Riley, Gretchen Dow Simpson, Phil Schirmer and Joseph Wheelwright. Upcoming shows are “Photography: Here and There,” Oct. 5 through Nov.  28; and a holiday show, which will open Dec. 7. Gallery hours are Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, contact the gallery at 596-0800 or frostgal@midcoast.com; or visit the website.
