Masons present check to Rockland District Middle School
Rockland — Rockland District Middle School received a gift from the local Masons toward a fundraising effort for a positive behavior interventions and support program at the school.
On Dec. 21, Jeff Curtis, master of the Aurora Lodge of Masons, and Mason Jeff Lamkins presented an $1,000 check to Principal Kathy Hollicker and Suzanne Edwards, school climate committee chairman.
The program is a state and national program designed to aid schools to achieve academic and behavior success by focusing on positive aspects of schools and students instead of the negative. By promoting respect, responsibility, and readiness throughout all areas of the school, the program hopes to encourage and build a safe and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and parents, said Suzanne McMackin, teacher and program coordinator.
“As we started this program on our own using another school’s format, we have finally come to a point where we need help and further guidance as to where we go from here and how to fine tune what we have accomplished. Through the University of Southern Maine, we have hired a consultant specifically trained in the positive behavior program to help us in our progress to complete what we started and help to spread the good vibes," McMackin said.
The program has made a difference by improving daily attendance and reducing the number of discipline referrals, said McMackin. She added she hopes the program will expand throughout the district.
