Mariners, Warriors battle to double-overtime stalemate
Garver scores, Dugan assists, Billington solid in cage for MarinersNewport — The last time the Oceanside field hockey team made the trek to Newport to face perennial powerhouse Nokomis, the Mariners were sent packing from the postseason in the Eastern Class B quarterfinals in the fall of 2011.
What a difference a year makes.
While the Mariners did not knock off the talented Warriors Thursday afternoon, they proved they belonged in the discussion among Eastern Class B's top teams as they scored a late goal and held on for a 1-1 double-overtime tie with the Warriors Sept. 13.
Nokomis, the top seed in last year's playoffs, defeated No. 8 Oceanside 6-0 in the quarterfinals a season ago.
On Thursday, Isabella Garver scored the equalizer for Oceanside with 2:01 remaining in the contest, on an assist from Brooke Dugan, to send the game to overtime. The game ended in a stalemate after two eight-minute, 7-on-7 overtimes.
Taylor Lovely scored in the first half for Nokomis, on an assist by Kelsey Kerstetter.
Zoe Billington and Zoey Proctor combined to make 12 saves on 13 shots in the cage for the Mariners, while Kendra Underhill made 10 saves on 11 shots for the Warriors.
In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class B, Oceanside (4-1-1, 8.7117 points) is ninth, while Belfast (6-0, 25.8418 points) is first in the 14-team region. The top nine teams qualify for the playoffs.
