Thomaston — While the weather has been less than ideal for the majority of the high school spring athletic season, perhaps the Oceanside girls lacrosse team does not mind the cold, rainy conditions that have engulfed the Midcoast in recent weeks.

The Mariners win/loss record certainly seems to reflect that, as Oceanside held Gardiner scoreless in the second half on Monday, May 8 at Sam Pendleton Field and emerged with a lopsided 11-2 victory.

Through five mtches, the Mariners have outscored opponents 43-22. Oceanside is 4-1, with its lone loss against top-ranked Morse of Bath.

On Monday, in cold, rainy, muddy conditions, players sported wind breakers, gloves, hats and ear muffs, among other items to keep them warm against what has been a brutal spring weatherwise.

Leading the Oceanside offense against the Tigers was Kelsey Brooks (goal, 3 assists), Jillian Brooks (3 goals, assist), Sierra Beal (2 goals), Julia Barbour (2 goals), Gabby Straka (2 goals), Sydney Hall (goal) and Taylor Hamlin (goal).

For the Tigers, Haile Lovely and Evelyn Hickley scored goals.

Elise Laslavic made eight saves in net for the Mariners.

Oceanside coach Angie Vachon said her team “took the field after the break and put out a well-balanced team effort.”

The coach said Laslavic, a senior, “had a great game in the cage for her team with penalty stops and some great saves” and “she continues to guide her team with confidence and nice direction.”

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Oceanside (4-1, 6.9444 points) is fifth, while Morse (4-1, 25.0000 points) is first in the 13-team region. The top nine teams qualify for the playoffs.
