Mariners ready to tackle first varsity campaign
Thomaston — The following is a synopsis of the Oceanside High School girls lacrosse team:
Coach/years coached current team: Angela Vachon, first year (but led team during its club tenure).
Last year's record/playoff information: This is the first year of varsity competition for the Mariners.
Roster: Seniors Olivia Hupper (attacker), Kim Young (midfield), Isabella Garver (attacker), Karly Robinson (defense), Sienna Barstow (defense), Alyssa Cardoff (goalie, defense) and Mercedes Schweighauser (defense); juniors Lily Vachon (midfield), Brittany Rytky (midfield), Bailee Cox (defense, goalie), Makaya Stone (midfield), Katie Jacob (midfield), Janelle Fowlie (attacker), Hailey Hobbs (defense, midfield), Rebekah Freeman (midfield, attacker), Alexis Pine (midfield), Cheyenne Montgomery (defense, midfield) and Audrey Raymond (defense, midfield); sophomore Abbey Lacasse (attacker); and freshmen Sydney Hall (attacker, midfield), Sierra Beal (midfield, attacker), Danielle Ladd (midfield), Jillian Brooks (defense, midfield) and Kelsey Brooks (midfield).
Known graduation losses: None.
Significant impact players: Hupper, Robinson, Young, Vachon, Rytky, Pine, Cox and Lacasse.
Team strengths: A team-oriented midfield and offense, speed and defense.
Team goals: To make their presence known in Eastern Class B and to grow as a team throughout the season.
Top league opponents: This being the team's first year of varsity competition, coach Vachon said, “We will certainly have challenging contests this season.”
Outlook: Coach Vachon is encouraged with what she has seen from her team in the preseason, working on several facets of the game and honing both team and individual skills. She added that the goalies have been working on being calm in net and she has seen "wonderful things" on the field from both the freshmen and upperclassmen.
While the Mariners likely will see a few bumps in the road during their inaugural varsity season, coach Vachon said “the rewards are sure to come.”
