Mariners blanked by host Cougars on gridironOceanside finds going tough against talented Mount Blue
Farmington — The Oceanside football team knew its Sept. 28 game with host Mount Blue of Farmington would be its greatest test of the season.
The undefeated Cougars narrowly lost to Leavitt of Turner in last year's Eastern Class B championship game and, this fall, were unbeaten heading into their Friday night game with the Mariners.
Little changed by the end of the Sept. 28 game as Mount Blue (5-0) dominated from start to finish, posting a 42-0 shutout victory over Oceanside (2-3).
Quarterback Jordan Whitney was 12-of-18 passing for 208 yards and three touchdowns to lead Mount Blue.
The Cougars wasted little time getting on the board when Whitney found Chad Luker for a 49-yard score on the game's first play and Nick Hyde intercepted and returned a Sam Meklin pass for a touchdown on Oceanside's first possession to put the hosts up 14-0.
Mount Blue then recovered a fumble on Oceanside's ensuing kick return and cashed in two plays later when Whitney connected with Luker from six yards out to push the Cougars ahead 21-0.
Meklin completed one pass and tossed two interceptions for the Mariners.
Mount Blue has scored more than 40 points in four of its five games this season and is averaging 41.2 points.
In the Maine Principals' Association Crabtree Points for Eastern Class B, Oceanside (2-3, 95.5000 points) is seventh, while Leavitt (5-0, 157.5000 points) is first in the 14-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
