‘Marine Masters’ at Art of the Sea

Jul 12, 2014
“Manana from the inn” by Bertil Whyman is part of this year’s “Marine Masters” exhibition at South Thomaston’s Art of the Sea Gallery.

South Thomaston — Art of the Sea will open its annual “Exhibition 2014, A Gathering of Marine Masters” Thursday, July 17. There will be a reception for the artists at 5:30 p.m. with entertainment by the Angela Anderson Duo with catering by Tracy Pleines. The exhibit will run through Labor Day at Art of the Sea, at the Keag on Route 73.

This year’s “Masters” marks Art of the Sea’s 20th year and includes a number of new works of Maine from internationally renowned artists John Stobart, Jeff Sabol and Don Stone, painted expressly for this exhibit; as well as many works from members and fellows of the American Society of Marine artists plus many local artists both established and emerging.

In addition to the exhibit, there will be a major miniature exhibit featuring 20 new works by Charlotte Carney, who is known for glorious small works of landscapes and seascapes. A preview of the entire exhibit may be seen via the Special Events tab of the gallery’s website, artofthesea.com.

The 4,500 square foot gallery at the reversing falls offers an enormous collection of nautical art from local, state, national and international artists in all media, and a proper sampling of its artists’ work will be available in the entrance gallery. There are at least 100 half hulls and full rigged ship models from primitive decorative pieces to museum quality cased models on display at all times.

Art of the Sea is housed in a 19th-century waterfront building, and there is always a place to park. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and any other time by appointment. For more information, call gallery director Joan Woodhull at 594-9396 or visit the website.
