Mardi Gras blues dance at Samoset

Feb 13, 2013
Rosie Ledet

Rockport — Mardi Gras may have been Feb. 12, but the bonne temps will rouler through Friday, Feb. 22, thanks to a dance party featuring Rosie Ledet "The Zydeco Sweetheart" in the ballroom of the Samoset Resort, 220 Warrenton St.

The party will run from 7:30 to 11 p.m., offering a big dance floor and a cash bar. Those who wish to stay the night will find the Samoset is offering a special Mardi Gras Party room rate.

Easily the queen of southwest Louisiana's rootsy Creole zydeco scene, the acclaimed singer/songwriter is a rare woman in a male-dominated genre. Ledet’s musical roots are tied to the blues. Her sound is built on hoarse, repeating squeezebox riffs, and the family Zydeco Playboys band takes their punchy rhythms on the road for as many as six weeks at a stretch. The group features Rosie's husband, Morris, on bass and accordion; nephew Corey Ledet on drums; father-in-law Lanice Ledet on rubboard; and guitarist Kent August.

Tickets are $25, $200 for a table of 10. For tickets, call Paul Benjamin at 596-6055; for the special Mardi Gras Party room rate, call 594-2511.
