make note: Tuesday, September 10th at 8pm author Josephine Waitstill Swan will be interviewed on WRFR
An interview with Josephine Waitstill Swan, author of The Right Car: A Hitchhiker’s Hymn to the Divine in Humanity, will air Tuesday, September 10th at 8pm on Jo and Cheech’s Radio Hour on WRFR-LP 93.3 and 99.3 FM and streaming online at www.WRFR.org
The interview will be pre-recorded at Josephine’s home in Maine.
In the interview, Josephine will talk about her book which is a memoir of an epic hitchhiking trip she took from Montana back to her home in Maine in 2011.
In the book, Josephine finds herself broke and friendless in Montana and has to hitchhike 2,500-miles home to Maine. When this happens, she takes it as a divine trial – a test of her faith that she was meant to accept: to accept the good, the bad, and whatever else life threw at her. Switching easily between forthright narrative and devout meditation, she recounts the hardships of the road, the kindness of strangers and, above all, the conviction that whatever happens to her is meant to happen.
Whether on the receiving end of incredible generosity, or hungry, cold and abandoned on an inner-city on-ramp, Swan surrenders to what she calls karma, but which might be termed Divine Will or fate. In spite of the trip's dangers and difficulties, surrender for Swan never means giving up, for the trip home is her karma that she must accept and pursue. Swan describes her rides with humor and compassion, finding good in every driver, convinced that every car that stops for her is The Right Car – the one meant to carry her to her destiny.
A long-time Maine resident, Josephine Waitstill Swan has spend numerous periods over 27 years in a Siddha Yoga meditation ashram under the teaching of Swami Chidvilasananda (the unnamed guru of Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love). She has frequently lived in solitude, often in tents or self-built cabins, in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Washington State, and on commercial fishing vessels in Alaska. She now lives on a remote island on the Maine coast.
