Maine's bear hunt
There are petitions being circulated to have a referendum to prohibit bear hunting using salting with food to attract and eventually shoot the bears. While I am not a hunter and not particularly fond of this method, I realize the bear hunt is a source of income to many Mainers and has been part of their culture for many years.
Those opposed to the hunt cite humanitarian reasons for their opposition. I wonder how many of these people are offended by profiting from owning stocks in companies that not only kill mammals and birds, but also kill innocent people.
I am referring to companies like BP and other oil companies whose spills devastate wildlife and pollute. Mining companies with no concern for our environment and many third world countries as well. Land that is destroyed forever. How about corporations building drones that wipe out women and children without regard to any human decency or concern. We stockholders profit from them, don't we? So why should we interfere with those who profit from the bear hunt? Is our behavior any different from theirs? Keep those dividends coming!
My point is that sometimes we look at others as being the bad guy when we ought to broaden our vision and include our own behaviors and motivations that might be supporting the very things we want to outlaw.
