‘Maine Photography Show’ 2014 awards

Boothbay Harbor — Sarah Beard Buckley of Cape Elizabeth walked away with the Jim Taliana Best of Show Award sponsored by The First Advisor's in the 2014 edition of the “Maine Photography Show.” The announcement came at the end of the awards ceremony April 11 at Boothbay Region Art Foundation, 1 Townsend Ave. BRAF is the presenter of the “Maine Photographer Show” and the Best of Show Award is named after the late Jim Taliana, who guided the institution of this show open only to Maine-based photographers.

Juror Freeman Patterson called Buckley's image, “White Calla Lily,” an “absolutely stunning photograph in it sheer simplicity and graphic quality! This non-representational or abstract image evokes far more than it describes, inviting me to venture far beyond ordinary ways of seeing."

Other winners by category are as follows. In Black and White, Peter Felsenthal of Trevett’s “Waterfall” got first; Stephen Thomas of “Cumberland Center’s “At Your Service,” second; and Tony Marple of Whitefield’s “January on Rodger's Pond” third, with Honorable Mentions to Rick Scanlan of Wiscasset’s “January Snow, South Bristol” and Daniel Dow of Cumberland Center’s “Two Cottages, Ireland.”

In Color, first place went to Lydia Goetze of Southwest Harbor’s “Upper Hadlock Pond”; Scott See of Boothbay Harbor’s “Clarks Cove,” second; Craig Snapp of Brunswick’s “Ditch Ice with Leaves,” third, with Honorable Mentions to Michele Barker of Hudson’s “Wood Duck Taking Flight” and Michael Austin Kane of Damariscotta’s “White Water.”

In Student, first place went to Sam Delaware of Durham’s “Sarah”; Michaela Peabody of Jefferson’s “Winter Rose,” second; and Matthew Burnham of Boothbay’s “Tidal Foam,” third, with Honorable Mentions for Yanmei McElhaney of Camden’s “Last Train Home” and Elena Laustsen of Rockland’s “Vela.”

In Special Theme/ Flowers, first place went to Michael Fillyaw of Kennebunk’s “Wallflowers”; Liz Rollins of North Yarmouth’s “The Last Iris,” second; Robert Crink of Edgecomb’s “Flowers Hope,” third, with Honorable Mentions for Marie Pierce of Augusta’s “Divas” and Kathleen Toubman of Rockland’s “Red Claret in the Desert.”

The MPS committee each year selects an image for the cover of the exhibition catalog.  This year's photo is “My Iris Yoga Instructor” by Steve Demeranville of East Boothbay.

Event sponsors provide cash prizes in each category. In addition to The First Advisors Best of Show award, the Black and White category was sponsored by the Portland Camera Club, the Student category by Capital Area Camera Club, while the Color Category sponsorship was shared by Boothbay Boat Sales, Jonathan Manning, Boothbay Framers, Laddie Drucker and McSeagulls Restaurant. The Special Theme/Flowers category was sponsored by Boothbay Region Greenhouses.

The 2014 “Maine Photography Show” is now open through Friday, May 2, at the Boothbay Region Art Foundation gallery, 1 Townsend Ave. For more information, visit mainephotographyshow.com.
