Maine Media Women reboots

Aug 26, 2014

Damariscotta — After several special meetings held in spring and early summer, Maine Media Women has redefined its mission and established a new informal format for its monthly meetings. The first meeting in the new format will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Mobius Center on Main Street/Business Route 1, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Members of the 63-year-old organization realized that its original mission — “to support the advancement of women in the [traditional] media” — had been accomplished and that the efforts of the group had evolved in a different direction. This is reflected in the new MMW Mission Statement: “We are a community of creative women who support and encourage each other’s creative work.”

While the name has stayed the same, Maine Media Women will no longer charge an annual membership fee; and meetings will be open to all women involved in creative pursuits, either casually or professionally. These could range from blogging to painting, mixed-media art to poetry, photography to graphic design and much more.

The standard meeting format will be a roundtable, where attendees can share what they are working on; network and learn from each other; request comments and critique; and enjoy nonjudgmental support and encouragement. It is hoped that three or four attendees at each meeting will have work to share and discuss with the group. In addition to these “regular” meetings, two workshop meetings are planned, in October and April, with topics and fees to be announced at a later date.

All meetings are scheduled for the first Saturday of the month at the Mobius Center. To cover the cost of the venue rental, a $10 donation will be collected at the door — and each attendee will receive a ticket for a door prize valued at $10.
