Maine Literary Awards deadline nears
Portland — Nominations for the 2014 Maine Literary Awards are being accepted in 18 categories through the end of the month. The Maine Literary Awards are an annual competition sponsored and coordinated by the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance, and nominations are open to all Maine residents including seasonal residents.
The statewide competition is for published books, drama, short works (either published or unpublished) and student writing. Submitted works, regardless of category, must have been published during the 2013 calendar year. The editors (or lead editor) of books entered in the Anthology category must be Maine residents. Maine publishers of books by out-of-state authors may enter the Excellence in Publishing Award.
The 2014 book award categories are Fiction, Crime Fiction, Speculative Fiction, Nonfiction, Memoir, Poetry, Children’s Literature, Young Reader/Young Adult Literature, Anthology and the John N. Cole Award for Maine-themed Nonfiction. There will be a drama category for the competition’s drama/theater award. Short works awards categories are Short Fiction (20 pages) and Short Nonfiction (20 pages); and Poetry (10 pages). Youth awards categories are Fiction, Nonfiction and Poetry.
There is no separate category for self-published books, which should be entered in the relevant book-award category. Submission fees are $45, $25 MWPA members, for Book Awards and Excellence in Publishing Award; $25, $10 members, for Drama Award and Short Works Awards; and free for the Youth Awards. The 2014 Maine Literary Awards ceremony will be held May 29.
