Maine Community Foundation awards grants to Knox County groups

Ellsworth — The Knox County Committee of the Maine Community Foundation recently awarded $33,325 in grants to 11 nonprofits, including North Haven Community School, to create a school and community garden, the centerpiece of a new farm-to-school lunch and education program.

Other grant recipients include:

— Midcoast Area Veterans Memorial, to design a walkway between the Midcoast Area Veterans Memorial and the 4th Maine Memorial

— Habitat for Humanity, to expand the construction program to include rehabilitation and redevelopment

— Hurricane Island Foundation, to increase science programming for local students.

The Knox County Fund is a permanent endowment that supports projects that strengthen communities in Knox County. Applications to the fund are reviewed by a committee of local leaders. The next proposal deadline is Feb. 15, 2015. The application and guidelines can be found at mainecf.org.
