"Sister Islands," an oil on canvas, is part of Paul Niemiec's show at Monhegan’s Island Inn.

Monhegan — Lupine Gallery and the Island Inn, on Monhegan Island, will feature paintings by Paul Niemiec as the Island Inn’s 2012 solo invitational exhibit, "An Island of Light." A reception for the artist will be held Wednesday, June 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Island Inn.

The show, which runs through Oct. 7, features watercolors, oils and etchings that represent more than 30 years of painting on Monhegan by Niemiec. His work reflects his country upbringing and his deeply rooted interest in traditional American realism.

"Painting for me is an emotional experience about a real place, memory or feeling," he has said.

In his paintings of Monhegan, Niemiec explores the effects of light and atmosphere on color, rendering the familiar coastal landscape in fresh and original fashion. Niemiec works in various mediums including watercolor, oil, combined media, egg tempera and printmaking. His etchings have been featured in several publications, including a prominent profile in the book "The American Sporting Print: 20th Century Etchers and Drypointists."  He has exhibited in multiple group, juried and solo shows since the 1970s and has received numerous regional and national awards at exhibitions including the Salmagundi Club.

The gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Inn is adjacent to the Monhegan wharf, and ferry service is available from Port Clyde, New Harbor and Boothbay Harbor. For more information, call 594-8131 or visit
