Warren — Persistent morning fog did not dampen the spirit of the 58 runners and walkers who participated in the annual "Monkey Butt" 5-kilometer event on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Tyler Lupien, 41, of Waldoboro raced across the hilly 3.1-mile course to outdistance the field with his top finish. Aubrey Schaeffer, 15, of Rockport, was the first female finisher, eighth overall.

Lupien finished in 18 minutes and 55 seconds, while Schaeffer crossed in 25:13.

The event, centered around the Warren Odd Fellows Hall on Route 90, raised money for the Laken Harrington Memorial Fund.

This year's event raised about $2,000.

The fund is for children in the Midcoast who need sports equipment and/or money for camps. Anything sports related for the children this fund can help cover, said Judith Harrington, race director, and mother of Laken, in whose memory the event is held.

"Money also raised by this event helps cover suicide prevention/awareness materials," said Judith. "This is such a huge, growing epidemic in the Midcoast area."
