Avon, Conn. — Lucille (Allen) Beach, 93, of Avon, Conn., devoted wife of the late Hugh Hamilton Beach, passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at her home.
Born in Crowley, Colo., daughter of the late Robert and Julia (Andrews) Allen, she lived in Pueblo, Colo., Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Houston, Texas, New Canaan, Conn. and Dorset, Vt. before moving to Avon.
She received her bachelor of science degree from the University of Colorado and had been employed as a geologist for Standard Oil in Canada in her early years. The Smithsonian Institution asked to include her in their Women of Science Firsts Exhibition as the first woman geologist in North America.
She had been an active member of her church communities all her life, and was involved in volunteer work in Dorset, Vt. with Meals on Wheels and the Dorset Nursing Association. She enjoyed bridge and world travel.
She leaves four daughters The Rev. Diana Lee Beach of Thomaston, Susan Elizabeth Tackman of Kissimmee, Fla., Kathleen Terry Fell and her husband Brian of Avon, and Laura Joan Anderson and her husband Peter of Concord, Mass.; four grandchildren Alison Tackman, Benjamin and Reid Anderson and Shawn Fell; a great grandson Jaxson; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Hugh, she was predeceased by four brothers Robert, Paul, Larry, and Leslie Allen and a sister Mabel Cooper.
Family services will be held graveside in the spring at St. Mark’s Cemetery, New Canaan, Conn. There are no calling hours.
