Local food blogger to vie for World’s Best Sandwich
Rockland — Three-thousand miles away from the Dream Local Digital headquarters in Rockland, an event is gearing up that will forge a gastronomic bond between Midcoast Maine and Las Vegas.
Dream Local Digital Designer and Marketing Strategist Malcolm Bedell is traveling to Las Vegas to compete in the World Food Championships, Nov. 7-10.
Among competitors in categories ranging from Barbecue and Burgers to Dessert and Bacon, Bedell will be building something delightful in the World Sandwich Championship.
Bedell joined Dream Local Digital this summer, however continues to run his blog, "From Away," along with his wife. The two have been exploring and documenting Maine’s vibrant food culture since returning to the state after several years in Mexico. The couple shares their favorite food experiences in Maine and beyond, while wrapping in tales of their travels, to an evergrowing growing and loyal following.
Their writing, photos, and recipes have appeared in many national publications and one might recognize Bedell from his appearance on the Today Show, where he won the Chicken Wing Cookoff earlier this year.
Bedell then went on to qualify for the World Food Championships with a second place finish in the Wisconsin Cheese Council’s Grilled Cheese Academy contest with his recipe for Chorizo y Papas Grilled Cheese.
"Getting the chance to match sandwichmaking wits with some of the top chefs, restauranteurs and home cooks in the country is a dream come true for Jillian and I. We are thrilled by the opportunity, and can't wait to get to Las Vegas to compete," Bedell said in a news release.
The competition, billed as the “highest stakes food competition in the world,” features 450 competitors in seven categories with a prize purse totaling $300,000.
