Lobster festival Hometown Day moves to Sunday
ROCKLAND — The Maine Lobster Festival, held every year the first week of August on the waterfront, is changing Hometown Day — with free admission to all — to Sunday this year.
“In the past, Wednesday has been free admission, but for several reasons that will change this year,” said Nancy Jeffers, the festival’s director in charge of gate admissions. “Admission on Wednesday is $5 for adults, $2 for kids, under 5 for free. Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be $8, and Sunday is free. This will allow folks to enjoy a full day at the festival for free.”
The 65th annual Maine Lobster Festival will take place at Harbor Park Wednesday through Sunday, Aug. 1-5. The lobster festival was recently named one of the five best fairs and festivals in the United States by NBC's “Today” show.

The hard working Lobstermen and Women who are the ones that bring in the lobster for us to have the Festival are one of the main reasons that Hometown Day is Sunday, they have the day off!!! For all of you that don't know, there is ALOT going on Sunday of the Festival-Road Race, Kid's Contests,Kid's Parade, Crate Race, Crafts, and all of the wonderful food that the Festival serves ALL DAY till 6pm, hey people, give it a chance-YOU WILL BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!!!
Bad move, very bad move.
I would rather the commmittee, or whoever, come right out and say the reason for changing the date is for monetary reasons, don't try to ply it as Sunday is the better day for locals, it is simply about more gate receipts. I understand this but don't go to the bathroom down my back and try and tell me it's raining, please. I think we locals are a bit more in tune then that. I along with others who have posted won't be attending this year. Thanks anyway.
looks like I'll stay at home this year, instead of spending money on wed. night, my gain their lose
Nope, Sunday is often the "dregs" of the festival. People packing up and leaving early, run out of stuff etc. Only if the hometown kids get free rides all day!
Any of us locals can choose to volunteer and get in for nothing. No doubt it introduces many people into our area and the Festival Corporation has had many increases in costs over the years. KUDOS to all of the hard working CAN DO members of the committee who work hard all year to bring this together.
have you looked to see what things have been done for the area by the festival corporation. bought an ambulance for the city , re paved the entire public landing, a long commitment of money to the library and chamber of commerce, mildred merrill park purchased(overlooking the public landing)and given to the city with stipulation no permanent structures to keep the view, money to the rec center for chickie and other programs. these are only some of the good the corporation has has been able to do so far.so as far as sunday being free day it makes sence because all lobstermen have the day off along with the majority of others.if youre there with family, friends and neighbors the last day can be a fun relaxed daywith a few less out of staters. roger rowling
a full day at a festival where 'everything' is no longer taking place...the first day of a fair is always better than the last day. something tells me this has more to do with charging for the coronation. funny we spend months debating the public space the brass compass wants to have tables in (even though she has abided by the stipulation that people are allowed to sit there even if they are not purchasing from her restaurant) and yet the festival/city can completely deny entry to tax paying citizens...you know, the ones that foot the bill for all maintenance and upkeep of the PUBLIC landing. with a rockland ID the grounds should be free on every day. imho.
