It's official: Lions, 'Stangs, Mariners qualify for postseasonWindjammers come up short in playoff bid
After final games played Oct. 9, the regular season is now a recent memory for high school field hockey squads, with the postseason in sight for three of the four teams from Knox and Waldo counties.
The standings are now official as of Friday morning according to the Maine Principals' Association website, with all 14 teams in Eastern Class B having played their required 14 regular-season contests.
Thus, Belfast, Mount View and Oceanside have secured postseason spots, while Camden Hills will be on the outside looking in this season.
In the final Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class B, Belfast (11-1-2, 129.0944 points) is first, Mount View (10-3-1, 95.4847 points) fifth, Oceanside (8-4-2, 76.1607 points) seventh and Camden Hills (4-9-1, 16.4668 points) 12th among 14 teams. The top nine teams qualify for the playoffs.
The top-seeded Lions, the defending regional and state champions, will face the winner of the preliminary playoff game between No. 8 Gardiner (9-5) and No. 9 Old Town (9-4-1) in the quarterfinals Wednesday, Oct. 17. The prelim playoff will be Saturday, Oct. 13.
Interestingly, the Tigers are the lone team to beat the Lions this season, earning a 3-0 win over Belfast Sept. 22 in Gardiner. The Lions and Coyotes do not face each other during the regular season.
The fifth-seeded Mustangs will travel to face No. 4 Winslow (11-3, 108.6224 points) in the quarterfinals Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. in a rematch of last year's quarterfinal. Winslow defeated Mount View 6-1 Sept. 6 in Thorndike in their lone meeting of this regular season
Last year, also in the Nos. 4-5 spots, No. 5 Winslow defeated No. 4 Mount View 1-0 in the quarterfinals in Thorndike.
The seventh-seeded Mariners will travel to face No. 2 Nokomis of Newport (11-2-1, 114.6173 points) in the quarterfinals Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m., which also is a rematch of last year's quarterfinal. The Mariners battled the Warriors to a 1-1 tie Sept. 13 in Newport in the teams' lone meeting of this regular season.
Last year, top-seeded Nokomis defeated No. 8 Oceanside 6-0 in the quarterfinals, in a game also in Newport.
