ROCKLAND — Linda Dorothy McCormick, 65, died peacefully July 27, 2012, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport with her daughters and grandchildren by her side. She had been struggling with COPD for several years and had the strength to remain at home and care for herself until her death.
Born in Norfolk, Va., on Feb. 23, 1947, she was the daughter of Marguerite L. (Mahoney) and Roy H. Emerson. Linda grew up in Thomaston and attended Gorham State Teachers College. After her first year at that college, her wanderlust led Linda to England where she worked in London with the Department of Civil Services for the U.S. Navy. She married while in England and her first child was born overseas. For several years she traveled Europe extensively. She later moved back to Maine and gave birth to her second child.
Linda began a career in real estate and quickly became one of the top brokers in the area. For many years she managed the Rockland office of Jaret and Cohn, retiring early to live in Key West, Fla. She lived in the Keys on a sailboat and later had a home there. While in the Keys she met her partner Roger Guest, with whom she lived until her death.
Desiring to be closer to her grandchildren, Linda moved back to Maine in 1998. She spent her time renovating one of the oldest Capes in Rockland, raising several litters of Yorkshire Terriers, sailing, antiquing and spending time with her family. She loved playing Scrabble and rarely lost a game even as her health declined. She was thrilled to spend time with her great-grandchild Brady, who was born in January, and she often said, “He was a gift from God.”
Linda is survived by her daughters, Lisa Dehlinger of Rockland and Beth VanDyne and her husband, Jeremy, of Matinicus Island; her grandchildren, Julia, Jordan and Jack Dehlinger and their father Andrew, all of South Thomaston, and Emma and Maxwell VanDyne of Matinicus Island; her most recent great-grandson Brady Dehlinger-Wilgus of South Thomaston; her brother, Roy Emerson Jr. and his family of Thomaston; her sister, Carol Small and her husband, Larry, of Warren; her partner, Roger Guest; as well as her beloved Yorkey, Max.
An informal celebration of Linda’s life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 at her 258 Limerock St. home in Rockland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
