Lincolnville Ferry Terminal closed after mechanical malfunction
Lincolnville — A mechanical malfunction at the Lincolnville Beach Ferry Terminal has caused Margaret Chase Smith — which services Islesboro — to be diverted to Rockland in the immediate future.
Maine State Ferry Service Manager Jim MacLeod said a gear on the Lincolnville Beach transfer bridge broke around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 3. MacLeod said the transfer bridge is the piece of equipment that acts as an "interface between the shore and the ferry." He said the transfer bridge was new in 2009.
After learning a replacement part could take as long as several weeks to arrive, MacLeod and others decided to dismantle the second Rockland transfer bridge — which MacLeod said is not regularly used — and borrow the part to repair the transfer bridge in Lincolnville Beach.
"Through the nature of this malfunction the [Lincolville Beach] bridge is completely out of service," MacLeod said.
Prock Marine has been enlisted to assist with the project, MacLeod said. Tuesday around noon MacLeod said employees from Prock Marine were working in Rockland. He said he expects service from Lincolnville Beach to Islesboro will be restored by "Friday [July 6] at the latest."
Until the transfer bridge in Lincolnville Beach is repaired Margaret Chase Smith will be operating to and from Rockland to Islesboro.
Normally there are nine round trips from Lincolnville Beach to Islesboro daily; however, during the repair period there will be four.
The modified schedule is as follows:
Depart Islesboro at 7:30 a.m. to Rockland
