Lincoln County Grand Jury indicts Arline Lawless on murder charge
Wiscasset — The Lincoln County Grand Jury on Sept. 14 handed up an indictment for intentional or knowing murder against Arline Lawless, also known as Arline Seavey, of Waldoboro.
Lawless was arrested Aug. 15 and charged with shooting 34-year-old Norman Benner in late July.
The police affidavit said she shot her boyfriend because she feared he was going to leave her for another woman.
She made her first court appearance Aug. 17 at Lincoln County Superior Court. She was represented by attorney Philip Cohen, her court-appointed lawyer.
Assistant Attorney General Deb Cashman provided the prosecution.
Justice Jeffrey Hjelm asked Lawless if she understood the charges and her rights as a defendant. She replied "Yes" to both, and those were the only two comments she made during the five-minute proceeding, according to an earlier report filed by Andrew Benore for The Courier-Gazette.
The defendant did not enter a plea. A status conference is scheduled for 8:30 a.m., Sept. 27 in Lincoln Superior Court.
