Library to host illustrated talk on early gravestones Oct. 20
Rockland — Ellen Dyer will present "Early Maine Gravestones: An Illustrated Talk" at the Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St., Thursday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m. The talk will focus on the symbols and language used on 18th- and early 19th-century gravestones in Maine, primarily in the Midcoast.
It will discuss the evolution of the symbols and sentiments used in cemeteries from Wiscasset to Camden. Audience members will see a lot of really interesting gravestones from all over the Midcoast, learn some technical terms, some Latin, some religious history, some archaic words, and one letter from Old English.
Ellen Dyer is an independent museum consultant who has spent more than fifteen years visiting and recording some of Maine’s early cemeteries.
