ROCKPORT — Leona M. Lermond, 87, died peacefully Sunday, June 24, 2012, at the Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.
Born in Rockland on Sept. 30, 1924, she was the daughter of Victor and Myrna Elwell Grindle. Educated locally she was a 1942 graduate of Rockland High School. In April 1942, just before graduation, Leona began employment with Superior Gas and Oil Company in Rockland. It was there she learned the trade of bookkeeping, working with that company until 1953.
Leona went on to work with Bayside Oil Company in Rockland, until 1956 when she began with Frost and Wilkins Oil in Belfast, serving as their head bookkeeper.
On Sept. 3, 1960, Leona married Edwin S. “Deak” Lermond. Together they moved to Davie, Fla., where they resided until 1972. While in Florida she worked as a bookkeeper with several area businesses including Sears and Roebuck.
Mrs. Lermond enjoyed spending summers in Maine, while following her husband with his construction business. They continued to winter in Florida, where Mrs. Lermond worked at Hollywood Hills High School. Most recently, Mrs. Lermond was employed as a bookkeeper for 11 years with Maynard Tolman & Sons Builders, as well as LongCove and SeaLand Lobster Companies.
Mrs. Lermond enjoyed crafts, crossword puzzles, camping and fishing. At 80 years old, Mrs. Lermond took pencil drawing and watercolor lessons; which she took great joy in, often giving her works away as gifts.
Predeceased by her husband and two brothers, Victor C. Grindle and Loren E. Grindle, Mrs. Lermond is survived by her brother, Floyd H. Grindle and his wife, Evelyn; two sisters-in-law, Rosalie Grindle and Agnes Crabtree and her husband, Robert, of Camden; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 28 at Achorn Cemetery. The Rev. Wayne Sawyer will officiate.
