Lee, Gibson strongest in He/She-Man CompetitionsBoth participants earn $100 cash for winning respective divisions
Union — The 54th Maine Wild Blueberry Festival and 144th Union Fair began their week-long festivities Saturday, Aug. 17 and one of those saw a handful of Knox, Waldo, Lincoln, Kennebec, Cumberland, Oxford and Hancock county's strongest men — and women — vie for bragging rights and cold hard cash in the He/She-Man Competition.
In an event held in one of the fairground's many buildings, 11 men and five women competed, with each gender in the running for one of four cash prizes, with $100 each going to the winners.
In the end, Robert Lee of Waldoboro, a past champion, emerged victorious in the He-Man Competition, while Amber Lu Gibson of Appleton won the She-Man Contest.
Lee finished the demanding, grueling course in a time of one minute and 56.20 seconds, while Gibson finished in 2:09.30.
The course began with each participant moving a bundle of stacked wood from one crate to another, followed by throwing a piece of wood over the he-man/she-man contest sign four times.
Each participant then had to stack three large rocks on individual oil drums, followed by lugging two heavy weights 50 feet and haul, with their legs with a strap around their waist, a dog-sled with 120 pounds worth of cinder blocks another 50 feet to finish the competition.
Lighter weights, blocks and rocks, along with less wood, was used for the She-Man Competition.
While Lee and Gibson collected $100 for their show of strength, stamina and victories, second-place finishers collected $80, third place $60, and fourth place $40.
Robert Hanson of Bowdoin performed a demonstration of the course to kick off the competition.
