Knox Democrats welcome public to floodplain hazard talk
Rockland — The public is invited to join the Knox County Democrats at their Tuesday, July 8 meeting to hear two representatives of the Maine Floodplain Management Program discuss changes under way that impact the Midcoast.
In the face of rising sea levels and more damaging storm surges worldwide, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is remapping coastal flood hazard areas all over the United States, including the coast of Maine. Property owners in communities that adopt land use standards within flood hazard areas as mapped by FEMA have access to federally backed flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.
The Maine Floodplain Management Program works with individuals, communities and professionals to reduce the risk of flooding to people and property. Sue Baker, the state NFIP coordinator, and Jenn Curtis, mapping coordinator, will provide a general overview of the mapping efforts under way in the Midcoast. There will also be discussion of the insurance changes as mandated by the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 and the Homeowner’s Flood Insurance Affordability Act of 2014.
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with the usual potluck supper for any who wish to bring a salad, beverage or main dish to share. A microwave is available. Both Baker and Curtis will be available to talk to other attendees during the supper. Their presentation will begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a time for questions.
The business meeting for Democrats only will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets for the Great Travel Raffle will be available for purchase as well as for members who will sell them throughout the election season. Supporters may phone Knox County Democratic Headquarters at 594-3901 for details.
The Knox County Democrats will meet at the Stella Maris House, 148 Broadway in Rockland, at the intersection with Route 1. The Stella Maris House is accessible to the handicapped and has air-conditioning and on-site parking.
