Kenniston Machine, Maritime Energy secure Rockland titles

Both top seeds finish campaigns undefeated

Rockland — The Rockland Recreation Department's Peewee Basketball League championships were decided Feb. 13 at the Rockland Community Building, with two squads clinching undefeated seasons and, ultimately, their respective league titles.

Top-seeded Kenniston Machine (10-0) overcame a one-point third-quarter deficit to earn a 39-31 win over No. 2 Coastal Fuel (6-4) in the boys championship game, while No. 1 Maritime Energy (10-0) outscored No. 2 Mainely Lobster (6-4) 28-7 in the second and fourth quarters to pull away with a 36-17 win in the girls league final.

In the boys game, Kenniston Machine led 6-2 after the first quarter and 19-10 at halftime, while Coastal Fuel rallied to take a 22-21 lead after three quarters. Kenniston Machine then outscored Coastal Fuel 16-9 in the final stanza to clinch the league championship.

Cooper Wirkala scored 15 points to lead the newly-crowned league champs, while Cameron Kingsbury added 12; Dustin Cote, six; and Seth Sweet and Kasey Campbell, both two. Kenniston Machine was 3-of-5 (60 percent) from the foul line.

For Coastal Fuel, Cole Stevens netted seven points, while Drew Minery and Michael McGready each added six; Zach Hersey and Trevor Reed, both four; and Everett Allyn and Kaleb Marshall, both two. The league runners-up were 3-of-4 (75 percent) from the charity stripe.

Team members for Kenniston Machine include Seth Sweet, Zachariah Cody, Cooper Wirkala, Dustin Cote, Kasey Campbell, Cameron Kingsbury, Logan Putansu, Hunter Moore, Bryan Henshaw and Jordan Kennedy. The team is coached by Jim Wirkala and Dan Kingsbury.

Team members for Coastal Fuel include Zach Hersey, Cole Stevens, Trevor Reed, Andrew Severson, Drew Minery, Jordan Arteaga, Sherdon Simmons, Everett Allyn, Kaleb Marshall and Michael McGeady. The team is coached by Kevin Reed, Gary Minery and Garth Hersey.

The final boys regular-season standings were: Kenniston Machine 10-0, Coastal Fuel 6-4, A.M. Plumbing 4-5, Fisher Engineering 2-7 and Trackside Station 1-7.

No. 1 Kenniston Machine beat No. 4 Fisher Engineering 39-30 Feb. 11 to advance to the finals, while No. 2 Coastal Fuel bested No. 3 A.M. Plumbing 47-37 Feb. 12 to advance to the finals.

Girls basketball

In the girls championship game, Maritime Energy led 4-2 after the first quarter before extending its lead to 17-6 at halftime and 21-14 after three quarters.

Leading the new champions was Philomena Marsh with 15 points, while Kalli Grover and Lindsey Brooks each added six; Jasmine Bouchard, five; and Haylee Sylvester and Chloe Jones, both two. Maritime Energy was 2-of-16 (12 percent) from the foul line.

For Mainely Lobster, Katherine Freeman and Ashley Young each netted four points, Grace Woodman added three and Kaycee Foster, Nicole Ladd and Chloe Blake, all two. The league runners-up were 1-of-14 (7 percent) from the foul line.

Team members for Mainely Lobster include Sara Dorr, Jacqueline Hall, Ashley Young, Kaycee Foster, Nicole Ladd, Grace Woodman, Audrey Young, Chloe Courant, Chloe Blake, Jessica Watkinson, Katherine Freeman, Katie Willis and Anna Kingsbury. The team is coached by Jeff Woodman and Dan Kingsbury.

Team members for Maritime Energy include Mattie Hooper, Autumn Wooster, Gabrielle Straka, Philomena Marsh, Kalli Grover, Chloe Jones, Jasmine Bouchard, Amanda Frost, Lindsey Brooks, Haylee Sylvester, Kaitlyn Smith, Brianna Lucier and Lainie Hooper. The team is coached by Randy Bouchard and Chris Straka.

The final girls standings include Maritime Energy 10-0, Mainely Lobster 6-4, Southend Grocery 5-4, Brooks Trap Mill 1-8 and Mid-Knight Auto, 1-7.

No. 1 Maritime beat No. 4 Brooks Trap Mill 48-40 Feb. 11 to advance to the finals, while No. 2 Mainely Lobster beat No. 3 Southend Grocery 39-15 Feb. 12 to advance to the finals.
