Nearly everyone can recall at least one time, likely during childhood, when they found true joy in giving.  Do you remember the look on your mom’s face as she opened a present you made or picked out just for her?  Do you remember the anticipation you felt while you found the perfect hiding place for the gift you had for your dad – and how hard it was to keep it a surprise? Do remember the pride you felt when Grandma displayed the gift you made for her?

Christmas is a time of giving.   But much of what we hear about during the holidays is – shopping.   This has become the season of sophisticated advertising, aggressive marketing and frenzied spending.   It is very difficult to avoid getting caught up in it.  This is such a hard time economically, many of us will find this season painful.

Aldersgate United Methodist Church is hosting a Christmas celebration for children where every child will have the opportunity to make or choose up to four gifts, then wrap and tag them for the people they love.  “A Child’s Joy of Giving” will be held on Sunday, December 8, from 2 to 4 PM at the Aldersgate Church in Rockland.  The church’s “elves” will guide each child in deciding on gifts to make or gifts to choose, and then help them wrap and tag their presents.  Parents or caregivers can enjoy coffee and fellowship while the children are busy.
