The public is invited to enjoy a supper of baked beans and casseroles at the John Street United Methodist Church, 98 John Street, Camden, at 5:30 Saturday, September 7. The cost is $8 per adult, children under 13, $5.
What is the tradition of the beans? The recipe used for baking beans at the Methodist Church has been passed down through many select cooks, but the winning recipe stays the same. On the Friday before the supper, the beans are put to soak. Then early on Saturday morning the assigned bean baker arrives to rinse the beans and add the pork and flavorings. The beans simmer throughout the day, being checked regularly to assure even cooking, and sending out the wonderful aroma of old fashioned slow cooking.
Along with the beans, steaming casseroles and tasty salads are delivered to the diners seated at long tables who help themselves to corn, pasta, clam, chicken and other varieties of hot food, along with crisp garden, potato, rice and molded salads. All this is topped off with home-made pie, selected as people arrive to find a seat among friends and strangers who carry on lively conversation during the meal.
