John A. Smith

Waterville — John Austin Smith, 43, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, following a courageous battle with complications of diabetes.

Born in Camden, Sept. 25, 1970, he was the son of Charles Lewis Sr. and Margaret H. (Marshall) Smith of Rockport. He was educated in the Camden/Rockport school system and graduated from Camden/Rockport High School in 1989. During his life, John lived in the Camden/Rockland area, the city of Lewiston and most recently in Waterville.

John worked as a security guard during his working life but his greatest role was that of father and husband; a role he took on when he married Lisa Brooker Smith in 2010, becoming her husband and father to her children. Anthony, Jennifer and Alan are the children of his heart and in 2012 he legally took on the role as Alan’s dad. He was blessed with his relationship with Lisa and each of the children.

John loved everything science fiction, but especially Star Wars. He also enjoyed gaming, especially Dungeons & Dragon and Magic the Gathering, which gave him time to gather with his good friends and make new friends.

John will be remembered for his generous spirit, love of life and family. He will also be remembered for his humor and wit which he shared with everyone – whether they liked it or not.

John is predeceased by his father Charles and a brother Larry Jameson. He is survived by his mother, Margaret of Camden, his wife Lisa (Brooker) Smith and their children, Anthony Dubay, Jennifer Lynn Dubay and Alan Brooker-Smith, all of Waterville. He is also survived by many siblings – Lee and Cindi Jameson of Warren, Amy and Wayne Moody of Warren, Louie (Charles Louis Jr.) Smith of St. George, Angie Smith of Rockland, Lucretia Smith of Rockland and Tony (Anthony) Smith of Rockland. John is also survived by his North Haven cousins, Cindy Page and Jeannie Curtis who he had a wonderful bond with.

John’s family would like to express their thanks to Maine Medical Center and its staff, especially on R7, for the care and compassion that they showed to John and his family.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Winslow VFW Hall, Veteran Drive, Winslow, Maine. To share a memory or condolence with his family, please visit John’s Book of Memories at bchfh.com.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland.
