Jefferson man found dead after Route 17 crash

Jan 21, 2014

Union — The Knox County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 37-year-old Jefferson man whose vehicle went off Route 17 Jan. 21.

Chris LaFrance was found unresponsive at the wheel of a 2005 Toyota Rav4 that went off the road, clipped the guard rail and traveled 300 feet into the trees and brush, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.

The crash was reported at about 2 p.m. after the vehicle was spotted off the road by a passenger in another vehicle heading west on Route 17. They stopped and called 911 immediately.

Deputy Matt Elwell arrived on scene first. When medical personnel arrived on scene, they determined that LaFrance had died. No one else was involved in the crash.

It is unknown at this time if any medical condition of the victim was a factor, or the specific reason for the vehicle going off the road.

Union Fire and Ambulance assisted at the scene along with All Directions Recovery.
