Jazz, indie-pop in Velvet Lounge

May 24, 2013
The Barbour Clarke Jazz Duo features Cole Barbour, left, and Aaron Clarke.

Rockland — On Friday, May 31, Rock City Cafe's Velvet Lounge will present the Barbour Clarke Jazz Duo. The music will play from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rock City Cafe, 316 Main St.

Cole Barbour and Aaron Clarke have been making music together for more than six years now. One of their most recent endeavors, Barbour Clarke Jazz Duo showcases the two guitarists performing traditional jazz standards, occasionally dusted off and given a 21st-century feel. With almost two years of jazz performance under their belt, their ambitions are limitless and they are always searching for new textures and elements to make jazz as intriguing as ever.

On Saturday, June 1, Rock City Cafe's Velvet Lounge welcomes back Silent Sam & The Evans, formerly Papadello, from 7 to 9 p.m. Silent Sam & The Evans’ music is steeped in the sounds of traditional folk and blues with a modern pop sensibility. The band's melodies are infectious and their highly rhythmic take on the Americana sound always keeps the audience moving. Based in Portland, the band is led by singer/songwriter Evan Chase, whose introspective lyrics and varied influences help to create something entirely new in the folk and blues tradition.

As usual, there is no cover charge; however, tipping the performers is highly encouraged. For more information on this and other events happening at the coffeebar/cafe, call 594-4123.
