James Harkness Hutton
Simsbury, Conn. — James Harkness Hutton, 92, of Simsbury, Conn. and Friendship, beloved husband of Peggy (Sandifer) Hutton, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., son of the late Thomas Barrie and Mary Harkness Hutton, he lived in Simsbury more than 40 years. James graduated from Texas Christian University. During World War II, he worked as an engineer at Curtiss-Wright. He then worked on the design of a nuclear aircraft in Oak Ridge, Tenn. And retired after a long career in nuclear energy as a Project Director at ABB, the former Combustion Engineering in Windsor. He was a longtime volunteer for the New England Air Museum. James and Peggy purchased a home in Friendship after his retirement and enjoyed many summers there.
Besides his wife, Peggy, of 68 years, he leaves three sons: James David Hutton and his wife Susan of Albuquerque, N.M., Mark G. Hutton and his wife Hillary of Vienna and John H. Hutton of Canton; four grandchildren: Margaret Hedin, Thomas Hutton, Ian J. Hutton, and Sean C. Hutton. He was predeceased by a son Thomas Earl Hutton, a brother Robert E. Hutton, and a sister Sarah H. Ashman.
A memorial and burial will be in Simsbury Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to Roaring Brook Nature Center, 70 Gracey Road, Canton, Conn. 06019.
