Ian MacDonnell

Ian MacDonnell, 33, died Aug. 24, 2014, accidentally at Donnell’s Pond.

He was born Monday, Oct. 27, 1980, in Bangor to Linda (Nietz) and Michael MacDonnell. He was father to Melayna and younger brother to Jesse and Michael.

Ian spent part of his short life in Medway, Colo., Hawaii and spent most of his adult life on his treasured Mount Desert Island. He loved his work as a carpenter and his avocation as chef. Ian’s smile would light up a room. He was fun loving, gregarious and fearless. His grandfather, Gordon, called him the “comic relief.” His nieces and nephews describe him as “the best uncle ever,” especially after one of his famous Sunday breakfasts.

He is survived by his parents Michael MacDonnell and Jeff Ackerman of Castine and Linda and Robert Schofield of Edmunds; his daughter Melayna Benner of Warren; his brother Jesse MacDonnell and Heidi Hambrecht and their sons Isaac and Eli of Mount Desert; his brother Michael and Piyathida MacDonnell and their children Colin, Lalita, Anunthaya, “June Bug” and Sirikit of Camden; his uncle Paul and Marguerite MacDonnell, their children Alice, Nolan and Sean of Waterville; his uncle Marcus Nietz of Southwest Harbor; his uncle Adrian and Tina Lewis, their children Ekko and Trewett; and Tina’s children Logan and Saige of Southwest Harbor; his grandmother Marjorie Monteleon of Southwest Harbor; and his bonus grandmother Joan Bohn of Woodstown, N.J. He is predeceased by grandparents John and Georgina MacDonnell, grandfather Gordon Nietz, uncle Preston Nietz and bonus grandfather Ronald Monteleon.

Family and friends are invited to share memories and stories in a celebration of Ian’s life Saturday, Aug. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert (Somesville).

Flowers would be appreciated but, if you would prefer, please donate to your favorite charity in Ian’s name.
