Hope blanks Appleton to claim Knox Suburban championshipTwo Knox County inland squads from higher geographical ground battle for title
Hope — The Knox Suburban Little League baseball finals were settled Tuesday night, June 19 at True Park, with Hope and Appleton vying for the coveted crown.
The hosts scored an early run and piled on later in the game to claim the title with a 5-0 decision over the visitors.
Leading top-seeded Hope at the dish were Will Davee (2 singles, run), Daniel Peabody (single, run) and Brayden Swan (single, run), while Isaac Kieran, Austin Eagan and Jack Moody all singled for No. 2 Appleton.
Davee, Aiden Roberts and Peabody pitched for Hope, allowing three hits and six walks, with 11 strikeouts. Moody, Dylan Taylor and Cooper Twitchell worked the hill for Appleton, allowing four hits and eight walks, with 10 strikeouts.
The league's regular-season records included: Hope, 13-1; Appleton, 11-3; Warren, 11-3; Union, 7-7; St. George, 5-7; Washington, 4-9-1; Thomaston, 2-11; and Lincolnville, 1-11-1.
The regular season was followed by the single-elimination playoffs, which culminated June 19. Hope finished 16-1 overall and Appleton 13-4.
In the championship game, Hope took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Davee singled and later crossed the plate, while the majority of the team's runs came in the form of a five-run fourth inning, thanks, largely, to a handful of walks and wild pitches issued by Appleton.
Rylee Rapp scored on a wild pitch, while Peabody came home on a bases-loaded walk to make the score 3-0. While Appleton tagged out a Hope runner at the plate for the first out of the inning, Davee plated a run with an RBI-single and Brayden Swan and Caellen Roberts later score to give the hosts a five-run lead.
Shortstop Joergen Ostensen also made a nice play in the top of the third inning for Hope, turning an inning-ending double play.
